In this article we will discuss the top 5 tag-teams in wrestling today. Again here at Indy Pro Wrestling we focus on the major wrestling promotions outside the WWE. This list will be compiled in no particular order and to make things fair I will not include the same promotion more than once. The list will include one team from AEW, IMPACT, NWA, ROH, & NJPW.
AEW - Lucha Bros
First on this list is the Lucha Bros which consists of Pentagon Jr & Rey Fenix. Since coming onto the American wrestling scene these two have become instant fan favorites to whichever crowd they have performed in front of. They first received mainstream exposure for their time with Lucha Underground but they became household names for their tenure with IMPACT Wrestling where they are former tag team champions. They are currently signed with AEW and are signed to a multi-year deal. They most recently competed in the first ever AEW Tag Team Championship match but where unsuccessful as the team of SCU (So Cal Uncensored) ended up winning the match. Even with their loss we are real confident to say that they are the current best tag team in AEW that are not the Young Bucks.
IMPACT Wrestling - The North
The North which consists of Ethan Page & Josh Alexander and are the current IMPACT Wrestling Tag Team Champions. They are the best tag team in all of IMPACT. These two have a long history which can be traced back several years. Before joining IMPACT Ethan Page & Josh Alexander were a decorated tag team in the independents called Monster Mafia. They have won several tag team titles in various independent companies before making their way to IMPACT. The North most recently competed at Bound For Glory and successfully defended their tag team titles by defeating the teams of Rich Swann & Willie Mack and the team of Rob Van Dam & Rhino. Only time will tell how many more title reigns they will hold both as a team and as single competitors.
NWA - The Wildcards
The team of Thomas Latimer and Royce Isaacs known as The Wildcards and are former NWA Tag Team Champions. While the NWA has just recently made a return via their online show Powerrr. There is still many tag teams that we have yet to see in action.
This online excerpt is from Lastwordonprowrestling.com about the Wildcards gained entry into the 2019 edition of the Crockett Cup by winning the Wildcard Battle Royal at the event’s start, and then defeated the team of Flip Gordon & Bandido to advance to the finals, where they were beaten by Villain Enterprises for the vacant NWA World Tag Team Championships.
Earlier this past September, the team of Isaacs & Latimer (now dubbed The Wildcards) won the titles at the ROH/CMLL Global Wars Espectacular. Royce Isaacs is an emerging star from the West Coast, best known as being part of the One Percent alongside Jorel Nelson, who captured the DEFY and Future Stars of Wrestling (FSW) Tag Team titles last year. Isaacs is also a regular with Championship Wrestling From Hollywood, where he’s a former UWN Television Champion. Thomas Latimer is best known by the ring name Bram, from his four year run with IMPACT Wrestling where he was a former TNA King of the Mountain Champion and member of Death Crew Council with “Cowboy” James Storm and Eddie Kingston. The UK native has remained a fixture on the UK indie scene for the past few years before becoming a part of the NWA earlier this year.
ROH - The Briscoes
When you think of ROH and tag team wrestling the Briscoes are always the first team that comes to mind. They have remained loyal to ROH since it very first ROH show. The Briscoes are the most successful tag team in all of ROH. They have held the ROH Tag Team Championship a total of 11 times & are the current champions. The Briscoes have a total combined 1,223 days (as of this writing) ROH Tag Team Champions
The Briscoes have challenged them all over the last 17 years. Their most famous feud would have to be with the American Wolves (Eddie Edwards & Davey Richards) during this time at Final Battle 2009 the Briscoes would go on to defeat them and become 6 time ROH Tag Team Champions.
NJPW - Guerrillas of Destiny
In March of 2016, when Loa joined Tonga in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, As members of the Bullet Club stable they would later branch off on their own and become know as The Guerrillas of Destiny. They are the current and five-time IWGP Tag Team Champions and former three-time NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Champions with various Bullet Club teammates. They are also known for their time with Ring of Honor, where they are former ROH World Tag Team Champions, making them overall six-time World Tag Team Champions between NJPW and ROH overall.
Right now in NJPW they are showcasing an impressive winning streak as they have been IWGP Tag Team Champions since February 23, 2019. They are 12th overall in longest reigning IWGP Tag Team Champions of all time. If they can break the record of their former stables mates of Doc Gallows & Karl Anderson (Bullet Club) at 365 days the will become the 4th longest IWGP Tag Team Champions of all time. We here at Indy Pro Wrestling think that G.O.D can easily break that record and become one of the greatest tag teams of NJPW.
