Rocky Romero has an incredibly decorated career in wrestling but the one thing he’s never done is win a singles championship in Ring Of Honor.
Romero has wrestled across the globe and he’s a three-time ROH World Tag Team Champion and eight-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion, but he is now determined to win the ROH Pure Championship tournament. Speaking on the latest episode of the “ROHStrong Podcast” with Kevin Eck, Romero said “it would mean the world” to him to win the Pure Championship, adding that he feels like it would be a really big moment to cap off all of his hard work.
“I’ve done the tag stuff for so long with so many different partners that I just feel like winning a really major singles title would be like the icing on the cake for me. I feel like maybe all the hard work that I put in, 20-plus years, that it would just all culminate into that one moment, that one title. It would be something that would be mega to me.”
Despite being with the company while the title was still active, Romero never got a shot at the Pure Championship during its original run. Romero says it should have happened the first time but he’s happy that things have come back around and he’s training to get in the right mindset and shape for a unique tournament.
“I should’ve. That was somebody’s bad,” Romero said. “I think I would’ve been great at it. That was my stuff. … [But] I’m fortunate and grateful that I get the opportunity now. It’s something that I was interested in when I was a young man. It went away. I started doing other stuff. … And then to have it come into your life and it’s presented to you, especially during this time, it’s like, ‘OK, cool, now I need to prepare for this. I need to get in the right mental state. I need to do what I can physically in the short amount of time to get into shape and treat it like if it’s [Mike] Tyson’s comeback. For me, it feels like that.”
Romero opens the Pure Championship Tournament with a match against New Japan Pro-Wrestling star David Finlay; their A Block match airs on the weekend of September 19. The full podcast with Romero drops this Monday at 7 a.m. ET on ROHWrestling.com and most podcast platforms.
